Kaser VGA Cards FAQ

1. Why does my computer tells me my 6326 driver is not compatible with DirectX after I have installed the latest driver from SiS web site?

The 6326 drivers we put on the web site do not include the DirectX driver for reducing the file size. This message appears in the Readme file. If you don't install DirectX, you may possibly face an incompatibility problem. Please go to the driver page to get the link to the appropriate Microsoft Web Site (http://www.microsoft.com/directx/)

2. If you want to add another VGA card to the motherboard, how do you disable the VGA part that is on board or integrated with your system chips?

Every motherboard manufacturer has different ways of implementing the setting up of the display priority of the slots. If you add a PCI VGA card on a PCI VGA(like 5598, 5596) based board, there's no problem for the board to see your add-on card as the first display. If you add a PCI VGA card to a AGP/Super AGP VGA based board (like 5600+6326, 530, 620), you will need to set up the display priority. Every board manufacturer has its own system of setting the priority up. Some of them will implement it in the BIOS, in the item "Integrated Peripheral"," Initial Display First", you can choose "PCI slot". However some other manufacturers implement the settings by using jumpers, if this is the case in your situation you will need to refer to your manual or contact the manufacturer for further help. The best solution is to seek help from the manufacturer of your board. Often this information is available on the manufacturers web site.

If you don't know who the manufacturer is, you can usually find out from the store where you bought the computer, or as a last resort you may want to ask a local pc dealer for help. After you finish the hardware part, you can remove their VGA driver from your system. Please go to "Control Panel","Add/Delete programs" to remove the driver. Don't let the exclamation mark (!) that appears in the Device Manager bother you, if you have already installed your second card successfully. It won't influence your VGA display.

3. Does SiS6326 support VESA 2.0? If so where can I get the driver for it?

Yes, SiS6326 is compliant to VESA 2.0 specification. Because the codes have been included in BIOS, SiS6326 can support VESA 2.0 compatible programs directly without requiring additional drivers. If you are experiencing display problems or compatibility issues, one can try to update SiS6326 BIOS by the file Tsr.exe. (File Tsr.exe is on SiS6326 Win98 driver page) In this way, the VESA 2.0 support can be updated at the same time and the VESA program compatibility can be enhanced.

4. How to get a resolution and refresh rate higher than a standard mode (640x480) under Windows?

A standard SiS6326 driver is capable of supporting resolution up to 1600x1200 and a refresh rate up to 120Hz NI. The resolution level that one's system can support, however, is not only determined by the driver but by the size of video memory and monitor type as well. Therefore, before configuring a display mode for your system, please make sure if the video card has sufficient memory and that your monitor can support the desired resolution. The procedure to configure the display mode is:
  1. Install SiS6326 driver.
  2. Select monitor type.
  3. Change resolution and refresh rate under "Display Properties".

The procedure for selecting the proper monitor can be a little tricky here is the correct method:

  1. Go to "My Computer","Control Panel", "Display", "Settings", "Advanced","Monitor", then press "Change".
  2. Select the monitor driver which matches your monitor type from the device list or you can provide the driver yourself by using "Have Disk" button.
  3. After setting it up correctly, the SiS6326 Display Properties will only show those modes that your monitor can support and this will be done automatically.

5. How can I install the driver for sis6326/305 ?

There are 2 methods of installation:
  1. Use the setup program to install the driver. There is setup.exe in each relative operating system folder (for ex. Win95 has its own folder), just clicking this file will install the driver automatically.
  2. Use the system add hardware to install it.
    1. Plug card into your system. Then, reboot the system.
    2. Windows will detect the new hardware device while the system boots up.
    3. Select "Have Disc" to choose the folder within which to place the driver for your operating system. The system will automatic pick up the relative file to install the driver.

6. Why does my system lock up after I installed the SiS VGA driver?

The "no more memory" error message is not indicative of the problem or the fix. We exclude C0000~CFFFF for Multi-Monitor VBIOS loading issue. Try to narrow the problems range and identify the root cause, e.g. removing the sound card...etc., to see if the add-on cards are causing the conflict.

7. How to do I disable the VGA that built-in to UMA architecture?

When a new VGA card is installed on your motherboard, the SiS built-in VGA will automatically disabled.

8. How can I get the VESA 2.0 driver for DOS?

VESA 2.0 is available on the SiS Web Site Driver Page - the VBE block. Please download and execute it under the DOS prompt to get VESA 2.0 support.

9. Does SiS VGA support drivers for Linux/Unix?

The SiS VGA chipset is based on the VESA 1.x and 2.x specification. So, you can use the VESA driver or the standard VGA driver provided by Linux/Unix to meet your needs. SiS doesn't support Linux/Unix driver. We have passed datasheets and design guides of our products SiS5597/5598, SiS5596, SiS6205, SiS6201, and SiS6202 to XFree86.org for their references. You may refer to this site: http://www.xfree86.org.

S.u.S.E. maintains X servers that offer support for SiS video chipsets. These servers can be accessed at no charge and are only for Linux based operating systems(Slackware, Redhat, S.u.S.E, Debian, etc.) The URL for this X server is http://www.suse.de/XSuSE. You can see: SiS86c201(6201) SiS86c202(6202) SiS86c205(6205) SiS5597 SiS5598 SiS6326AGP The next option for UNIX/Linux users is to obtain a commercial X server. You can get a single-head accelerated X server from XiG (http://www.xig.com).
