Kaser USB Storage Drives FAQ
(Vault and Jumbo series)

The disk does not mount or appear as an icon.

The system does not recognize the drive.

If your USB device does not "enumerate" as a disk, confirm that (1) it is connected properly, (2) has power if required, or (3) your other hardware is working properly (see next question).

Restart your computer - Often times, you will just need to restart your computer after plugging in the drive and turning it on. After the restart, the disk will usually appear.

Check Formatting - Check to see if the disk is properly formatted. In Windows 2000 and XP, select Administrative Tools from the Control panel (or Control panel > Performance and Maintenance). Select Computer Management and then Disk Management. If your drive appears in the list but is listed as Unallocated, right-click on the disk space graph and select New Partition. Follow the prompts. You may need to restart to complete the process.

How do I troubleshoot a USB "drive not found" message?

Check Power - Confirm the drive has power and that the power LED is glowing on the drive and power converter. If the LED is not lit then check that the power switch on the back of the drive is in the ON position. Then check that all the connections are tight (power cable to wall, power cable to power supply, power supply to drive). If it still does not light up, try another outlet.

Confirm the USB cable is plugged in to the computer and the drive and restart your computer.

Check Device Manager to confirm the USB hard drive is detected and configured properly - if not try connect the drive to another USB port. To open device manager (Window XP / Windows 2000) right click on my computer > choose manage > choose the Device Manager icon.

Check Device Manager to to confirm the USB host controller is properly configured - If the host controller is in 'other devices' then additional drivers are required for the host, contact the PCI card vendor or motherboard vendor for the appropriate drivers. Also, check your motherboard instructions to make sure that the USB host controller is not disabled in the BIOS.

Try another cable and host adapter.

Where can I get the user's manual?

You can download them here on the Kaser downloads page.

Where can I get drivers for my external hard drive?

Windows XP / 2000 / Me
No additional drivers are needed for these operating systems. The drivers that ship with these operating systems should automatically load when the drive is connected.

Windows 98 SE
If your product came with a Driver CD, insert the CD into your computer and install the appropriate driver using the Add Hardware Wizard in the Windows Control Panel. You may also find the appropriate driver on the downloads page on the Kaser website.

Mac OS X
No additional drivers are need for Mac OS X to see the drive. However the first time you use the drive you may need to format the drive for your operating system.

Has my power supply failed or has my drive failed?

To troubleshoot a power supply or disk failure, look to see if the power supply LED and the StorageVault power LED are lit. If they are both lit, the drive may be defective. For defective drives under warranty, return to your place of purchase or contact Kaser tech support via the tech support link here. If the power supply LED is not lit, it is defective and should be replaced. See the next question.

Where can I purchase a new power supply?

Contact Kaser Corp via the tech support link here and ask for current pricing on replacement power supplies.

Why does the formatted drive have less capacity than stated on the box?

All disk manufacturers label their disks by the unformatted capacity of the raw drive. The formatted capacity may be less. The difference comes from a numerical conversion (using base 10-decimals vs base 2-binary) and from the fact when the operating system formats your drive, the formatting also uses up some of the disk space with special files which are hidden to you.

If your drive is limited to 32GB or 137GB, you should also check that your computer has the lastest BIOS in order to access larger disks. Please consult your computer manufacturer's website for their BIOS downloads.

Why does my drive report as full even when it is not
(when copying files larger than 4GB)?

The Kaser Vault series drives and Jumbo drives come formatted FAT32 to allow compatibility with newer and older Windows computers. This file system limits the maximum size of a single to 4 GB. Any attempt to copy or save a file larger than 4GB will cause an error message to be displayed.

For Windows 2000 and XP users, this limit can be removed if the drive is formatted using the NTFS file system. This is not an option for Windows 98 and ME users. To reformat using NTFS, do the following:

Warning: Formatting removes all data on a drive. Be certain which drive you are formatting before proceeding.

1. Back up your data.

2. Right-click on My Computer and select Manage.

3. Select Disk Management.

4. Locate the correct drive.

5. Right click the partition and select Delete Partition.

6. The partition becomes Unallocated Space.

7. Right-click the space and select New Partition.

8. Follow the wizard to create an NTFS volume.

Why can I not copy files to my disk because it is write-protected?

Some miniDrive models have a built-in write-protect switch. If you receive an error message indicating your drive is write-protected, disconnect the miniDrive from the back of your computer and slide the switch to the opposite setting. Then, reconnect your drive to copy your files.

What is the procedure for disconnecting my external hard drive?

Windows Right-click the Remove Hardware icon in the System Tray (next to the clock) and select Safely Remove Hardware. In the Remove Hardware dialog, click on the appropriate USB drive or mass storage device and click Stop. In the resulting dialog, click OK to confirm your selection. Click Close to close the Remove Hardware dialog and disconnect the drive.

In some cases where the drive is being used by an application (or often time the Windows Explorer), the drive will not be removed. Close any applications and any windows using data from the drive and attempt the procedure again.

Mac OS Unmount your external drive by dragging the drive icon to the Trash Can. You can remove the drive safely once any activity light has gone out.

How do I use a USB disk on both the Mac and PC?

To connect your Kaser drive to either a Mac or PC and read the same data, the drive must be formatted using FAT32 (not NTFS). The Mac can format the drive as a FAT32 volume using Disk Utility. Windows XP can format it as FAT32, but its format utility will only produce 32GB patitions as a maximum. However, there are 3rd party utilities (Partition Magic is the best known of them) that will format the drive as FAT32 under XP without that limitation. Alternatively, there are other 3rd party applications like MacDrive that allow Mac HFS formatted drives readable on PCs.

Can these external drives be re-used?

Yes, you can format the drives then reuse it. The drive can be formatted over and over with no damage.
